House Rules takes its name from a document, and the document is Veronica's. Her husband's adult son has come back to the family house, his girlfriend is there too, and Veronica, restless and not inclined to wait, draws up terms that suit her. The series is those terms being applied in a house that is anything but empty.

The mood is domestic suspense with a dry edge: ordinary routines on the surface, a second set of instructions underneath. Holly & Veronica's Shared man is the crossover, setting her charm against a second woman's playful energy, and it is the closest relative of House Rules by tags. If two women and one man who has to choose sounds like your kind of story, that is the one to open.

Who it suits, and which Veronica series to try instead

House Rules suits you if you like the older woman setting the pace, if a domestic setting with a ticking risk appeals more than a getaway, and if a step-family fiction between adults is part of the draw. It suits you less if you want the whole story to be about two people.
